Have you upgraded to Windows 98, yet? I have installed it on several computers, including an IBM 770 portable and an HP Vectra XU 133c. None of the installs were accomplished perfectly. My experience is, if you take several important steps before starting the install, the process will go easier. Most important, is to disable any TSR programs. This especially means anti-virus programs. Make sure to check your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files for TSR's. For instance, in Windows 95, Norton Anti-Virus loads itself in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file with a line similar to this:
@C:\SYMANTEC\NORTONAN\NAVDX.EXE /Startup
To disable it, all you have to do is add "rem" followed by a space to the beginning of the line after you open AUTOEXEC.BAT in Notepad. Make sure you do NOT disable any SCSI drivers or other hardware-specific drivers. After you disable all the TSR's, save the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and reboot. Then, insert the Win98 CD and follow the instructions! On several installs, I had the setup routine hang after the first reboot. I just hit the reset switch on the computer and let it try again. On one install, I had to hit the reset switch 4 times! Finally, it went through and everything has run smoothly ever since. Go figure!
